Position Description
The School of Science and Engineering (SSE) at IUGB is seeking a qualified and motivated Laboratory Technician to support instructional and applied research activities across its various laboratory facilities. The Laboratory Technician will work closely with faculty to develop, prepare, and carry out experimental work and hands-on laboratory activities for students, ensuring that all laboratory sessions run safely, efficiently, and in alignment with course learning objectives. The successful candidate will be responsible for laboratory activities across multiple disciplines, including the Petroleum Engineering Laboratory, Mining Engineering Laboratory, Fluid Mechanics Laboratory, Materials Strength and Science Laboratory, Biology Laboratory, Chemistry Laboratory, Physics Laboratory, and other laboratories within the School, as needed.


Key responsibilities include:
• Assisting instructors in the preparation, setup, and execution of laboratory experiments and demonstrations;
• Maintaining, calibrating, and troubleshooting laboratory equipment and instruments;
• Ensuring proper storage, handling, and disposal of laboratory materials, chemicals, and samples in accordance with safety regulations;
• Managing laboratory inventory, including ordering and tracking consumables and equipment;
• Enforcing laboratory safety protocols and ensuring compliance with health and safety standards;
• Supporting students during laboratory sessions and assisting with basic troubleshooting of experimental procedures;
• Maintaining accurate laboratory records, logs, and documentation; and
• Assisting faculty with applied research and capstone/laboratory-based student projects as needed.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in a relevant scientific or engineering field, such as Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Mechanical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Mining Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related discipline.
• A Master's degree in a relevant field is an advantage.
Experience:
• Essential:
? Demonstrated prior experience working in a laboratory setting, including experience with laboratory equipment setup, maintenance, and safety procedures.
? Experience assisting with or conducting scientific or engineering experiments in an academic, industrial, or research environment.
• Highly recommended:
? Experience working across multiple laboratory disciplines (e.g., physical sciences, engineering, and life sciences).
? Prior experience in a higher education or academic institution supporting instructional laboratory activities.
? Experience with laboratory safety compliance and regulatory standards (e.g., handling of chemicals, hazardous materials, or specialized equipment).

• Strong technical and practical skills across a range of laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
• Sound knowledge of laboratory safety standards, protocols, and best practices.
• Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple laboratory activities and priorities simultaneously.
• Attention to detail and a rigorous, methodical approach to experimental work.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and administrative staff.
• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a multidisciplinary academic environment.
• Reliability, professionalism, and a strong sense of responsibility, particularly regarding laboratory safety and the proper handling of sensitive materials and equipment.
• Adaptability and willingness to support laboratory activities across diverse scientific and engineering disciplines.
